Kira is a PhD candidate in the Department of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. Her primary research interests include issues of health, nutrition, hunger, risk and chronic poverty, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Kira received her Masters degree in the same department at Cornell. She wrote her Masters Thesis on nutritional issues of pastoralist households in East Africa. In particular, she looked at whether their nutrition responds differently to changes in different sources of income and explored possible reasons why that may occur. She also explored how nutrition is allocated within these households and compared intrahousehold nutritional well-being.
Kira grew up in the Chicagoland area. She is married to Gary Villa and they have an amazingly wonderful and hilarious son, Aidan. Outside of her family and work, Kira's favorite things are being outside, raspberry pie and a really good storythe Beatles and the Chicago Cubs are not half bad either!
