Alan is writing his dissertation on the role of political institutions in economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa.  He will look at empirical evidence linking political institutions and growth at micro, meso and macro levels.

At the micro level, survey data from DHS and Afrobarometer surveys will be combined to analyze how regional level institutions affect individual decisions.  Do mechanisms of contract enforcement and property rights affect individual’s wealth and opportunities?  Does political accountability affect individual wealth?

At the meso level, a panel commune census from Madagascar will be analyzed to shed light on the empirical links between contracts, property rights, and market functioning.  To what extent does price transmission across time and space depend on local level institutions, and can we identify which institutions are important for markets to work?

At the macro level, can we believably link political variables to economic outcomes?  Bringing together data from many sources, we will attempt to address the econometric problems of cross-country analysis and identify the possible mechanisms relating political regimes to economic outcomes.

Before coming to Cornell, Alan earned a B.A. in Political Science from Furman University and an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago.  He received a Jakob K. Javits fellowship for his graduate studies.  Alan has also researched trade with Harry de Gorter, measuring preferential rents to Least Developed Countries and analyzing the welfare impacts of trade preferences.  He is married and has three children, and when not working enjoys playing with the kids and football.
