Internships

Finding a summer job, internship, or volunteer opportunity can seem daunting. There are so many opportunities out there!

The CALS Career Development Office (CDO) offers a variety of resources that can help connect you to a broad array of opportunities. For example, you can now search through CDO's online database of over 500 paid and unpaid, regional, national, and international opportunities. The database includes internship descriptions and contact information, and you can search for opportunities by class year, as well as by geographic location.

Links to web-based postings of internships and summer jobs, and Cornell Career Services's online library catalog can help you narrow down the many exciting options. Your faculty advisor can also be an excellent source of job leads.

Don't forget to get individual assistance from a CDO counselor. It's the perfect way to start your internship or summer job search.

Earning Credit for Internships top

Because many well-respected businesses and organizations offer only nonpaying internships for which a student must earn academic credit, we have established a special one-credit, S/U independent study option. You are not eligible for credit if you are paid.

Please see the Undergraduate Program Coordinator in 150 Warren or refer to the eligibility requirements and internship contract for more information. The deadline for submitting a contract for a summer 2009 internship is June 8, 2009.

AEM Internship Support Grants top

Thanks to the generosity of a number of donors, the Department of Applied Economics and Management can offer modest support of up to $2,500 to AEM students to defray the costs of unpaid internships.

The objective is to enable AEM undergraduates to enrich their Cornell experience by accepting internships they might not otherwise be able to afford. Grants are to defray costs of travel to internship locations away from a student’s home (including extraordinary commuting costs) and, in some cases, extraordinary living costs.

First priority goes to students taking positions in the not-for-profit or community-service sectors (e.g., government, for-profit hospitals, or environmental services firms). Second priority goes to students whose financial need, as manifest by federal work study eligibility, might preclude an internship. Students with paid internships or who are not work-study eligible and working in the for-profit sector are ineligible for these grants.

Eligibility

1. A student must be an AEM undergraduate major, in any specialization. Graduate students, AEM minors, and transfers not yet formally accepted into AEM are ineligible.

2. Support is only available for unpaid internships, regardless if the student will receive academic credit for the internship.

Application Process

1. Application Deadlines: April 24 for summer internships; August 15 for fall semester internships; November 15 for winter intersession internships; January 1 for spring semester internships.

2. Complete the application form and include the required attachments.

3. Only hard-copy applications will be accepted; no e-mail submissions. Submit the completed application to Arla Hourigan in 149 Warren Hall no later than noon on the relevant deadline date.

Our intern from Cornell's Undergraduate Business Program is one of the best we have ever seen. She has clearly learned critical skills that will make her a desirable asset in the workplace. My partner and I were so pleased, we arranged for her to present to a sales meeting of financial advisors, as well as our managing director. They were impressed by both her content and presentation.
